It takes a week for Minho to finally find it in himself to get over it, and drag himself out of bed to the join his team for lunch. Even then, it’s only because his mother was sick of him using a kunai as an overt expression of his anger, and inadvertently breaking three of her pottery vases in one throw. Minho insists that it was a pretty good shot, and curses his reflexes for not producing such accuracy when it was actually due. If his kunai had made the target a week ago, he’d be galavanting around Konoha with a Chuunin jacket as a medal -- the youngest in his cohort. Now, all he gets is an angry pair of hands on his collar throwing him out the door.
He immediately regrets his flimsy attempt at good sportsmanship when he lifts the curtain into Ichiraku to see Jonghyun and Kibum both inhaling their ramen with a gusto that implies they didn’t even care that Minho had turned into a recluse for the last week and a half. To their credit though, there’s a bowl of untouched beef ramen in front of a third stool. Far away from Jonghyun, and Kibum had vowed vegetarianism a month ago (for the sake of his skin), so Minho takes resignedly takes a seat and stirs the noodles around with his chopstick.
Jonghyun finishes swallowing his mouthful and looks over at Minho. It’s a genuine smile, like maybe he had been worried about the state of Minho’s mental health for the last week. It’s ruined, however, by the smirk that appears followed by “‘Sup loser?”
Minho grips his chopsticks tightly with his fingers, stabbing a piece of meat. “How have you been Jonghyun?” he says in an attempt to be civil through clenched teeth. He refuses to give Jonghyun any further satisfaction. Really, Jonghyun was in no fucking position to say anything. He’d been impaled by a shuriken, and gotten their team’s scroll stolen not even an hour whilst they were in the Forest of Death. He was no better during the preliminary battles, where one taijitsu kick from Jessica had him out cold. He was the loser. Minho was cheated and--
“God Minho, it was a joke,” Kibum says through a full mouth. “Just eat your ramen, carnivore.”
“I know it was a joke,” Minho murmurs. Jonghyun snickers and tries to steal some beef from Minho’s bowl. “Get off,” Minho says, swatting Jonghyun’s chopsticks away. “No seriously, what have I missed for the past seven days?”
“Everything,” Jonghyun states. “Well, just before you swirled into your pool of unwrought teenage angst. Jaejoong-senpai went missing. Jessica chan is now under Boa-sama’s apprenticeship--”
“You missed my celebratory party,” Kibum says, looking down at his transparent soup and poking a lonely stalk of celery.
“Kibum made Nichkhun streak through the village,” Jonghyun says.
“What?” Minho says, eyes widening towards Kibum who was covering the bottom half of his face with a hand. His staple pose of shame. It’s then that Minho notices the true travesty on Kibum. “What did you do to your jacket?” Minho blanches. He has to sit on his hands to stop himself from grabbing onto the massacred clothing and ripping it off Kibum’s chest.
“What?” Kibum looks down at his once completely green Chuunin jacket. It now had random patches of denim fabric sewn onto it, as well as an assortment of badges. “It was so boring. I just spritzed it up a bit.”
Minho was proud of Kibum’s achievement. Yeah, he was also kind of baffled. Confused. Maybe a little jealous. But for someone who spent a majority of his time checking his hair in the reflection of his shuriken, Kibum was a talented ninja. Despite knowing Kibum for a larger part of eight years, Minho didn’t realise it until the final rounds. Where Kibum had managed to freeze Joonmyun using his own chakra and then utilised his Shintenshin no Jutsu to forcibly cause him to forfeit. It was both incredibly quick-witted, and an incredible cop-out. In retrospect, that win was a pretty accurate summary of Kibum himself. Even though the guy had just printed a cross-stitch pattern of a chibi kitten on Minho’s dream outer attire.
“Kibum,” Minho begins, putting down his chopsticks.
“Oh God,” Jonghyun says, pulling Kibum’s stool towards him. “He’s using that tone of voice again.”
“By the powers of my superior rank,” Kibum says, holding his hands out. “I command you to shut up and go back to wanking off to the Fourth Hokage’s statue.”
Minho thins his lips. This is exactly why he’d ran twenty kilometres around the outskirts of the city when he found out he was in a team with Kibum the Vainglorious, and his steed, Jonghyun the Beefcake. There was no respect.
“What you’re wearing Kibum, is a symbol of the village’s credence in your abilities as a ninja. There are people out there who would cut off their left arm for a chance to don the jacket you’ve just turned into a middle finger towards--”
“There’s no need for rhetorics and illusions of chauvinism Minho,” Jonghyun interrupts. “We all know you’re talking about yourself.”
“I’m not,” Minho insists, “I’m so over it. I’m happy for Kibum!”
Kibum kicks Minho under the table and huffs. “Well then, the only excuse you have for turning into a hermit for a week better be that--”
“If you finish that sentence with any implication of me jerking off to something, stop now,” Minho warns.
“Yeah Kibum.” Jonghyun agrees. “Stop trying to project your fantasies onto the rest of us.”
“Shut up!” Kibum squeaks out indignantly the same time Minho goes “Not even if Orichamaru wiped out the entire village.”
“I’d literally have to save a country in order to be Minho’s type,” Kibum says.
Minho bristles. “The Fourth Hokage was a hero--”
“You know what,” Jonghyun says, lifting himself off his stool and standing in between the two of them. “I’m sorry I brought it up. Well, that’s not true. I’ll never be sorry. But shut up,” he says to Minho, specifically. Kibum reaches his arm out for a hi-five which Jonghyun returns casually.
“You know,” Minho says, wrapping a strand of noodles around his chopstick. “I feel like I might be a little victimised in our Team. Just a little. A tiny bit.”
“It could have been worse,” Kibum offers. “When me and Jonghyun found out you were in our Team, we went to Sooman-sensei and begged to swap you with anyone else. Like, we even said we’d take Taemin instead.”
Minho perks up in his seat, glaring at the two of them. “You know what. That’s taking it too far. A psychopathic missing nin?”
“Hey! We didn’t know he’d become Orochimaru’s successor back then!” Jonghyun defends.

In a course of action that completely takes Minho by surprise, not, Jonghyun and Kibum make him pay for all three of their meals. For being a sore loser, they said. Jonghyun heads out early to see his father off on a mission -- but not before ordering two Seafood Ramen take-away, and making Minho pay for both of those as well. He forks over the money Teuchi with a grumble and briefly considers aiming a kunai in Jonghyun’s direction as he leaps off the buildings towards the gate.
The curtain behind Minho lifts up and Kibum steps in. Minho waits a few seconds to see if he was going to offer to chip in with the cash. Of course Kibum does no such thing and uses a fork to check out his reflection and pick a loose strand of hair near his scalp.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” Minho asks. It’s not out of spite, all of that having been depleted in the fifteen arguments that had started between them during lunch (most of them instigated by Jonghyun). Chuunin ninjas typically get an influx of B-rank and C-rank missions, whilst Genin like Minho were stuck having to rescue cats stuck in trees. God, how he wanted Kibum’s life.
“I look pretty hot in this jacket, don’t you think?” Kibum says, turning around and pulling the material tighter around him. What was Minho even meant to say to that?
“I don’t know Kibum. Maybe if you hadn’t slaughtered all prestige it holds,” Minho answers, leaving through the curtains and letting Kibum fall into step beside him.
They walk for five minutes side by side, with a respectful distance between them. Minho realises that maybe he had been a bit of a douche the last week. Everything else disregarded, at the end of it all they were teammates. Even if Minho hadn’t, admittedly, grown fond if Kibum’s prissy ways and absolute disregard for hierarchy, he knew it was his duty to support and be gracious.
Just as he’s about to apologise, Kibum breaks the silence with.
“I would have looked better on you.”
Minho stops in his tracks, kind of expecting Kibum to halt and look back. Instead he continues walking dismissively and Minho jogs to catch up.
“Excuse me?” he says.
Kibum shrugs, folding his arms behind his head. “Yeah. It would have looked better on you. Nichkhuns pretty much scorned the entire female population of Konoha, robbing them the sight of your delicious build in this jacket,” he grins, and Minho snorts. Of course.
“Appreciated,” he drawls.
Kibum snickers. “Seriously though. You should have won, you deserve it more than me. And don’t pretend you don’t think the same thing!” he adds when Minho looks like he’s about to protest.
“Well...” he trails off, looking away. Kibum slaps his chest and scoffs, looking away.
“Predictable,” he says, but there’s laughter in his voice. “I was actually really upset when you lost again Nichkhun, though. I thought it’d be cool if we had two Chuunins on our teams. Then maybe we’d stop getting assigned to that guy in Suna who keeps wanting us to babysit his sheep.”
“Only two?” Minho questions. “Is Jonghyun not included?”
Kibum chuckles. “Jonghyun is a foregone conclusion. I think he just wants to get married and settle down.”
“Don’t you?” Minho asks. “Not settle down, but do anything other than get your hands dirty?”
Kibum purses his lips in thought, burying his hands into his pockets. “I... kind of did. Though now I’m not so sure anymore.”
“Why?” Minho asks, genuinely curious. He remembers during their second-year of the Academy, everyone had to make a speech telling the class exactly what they wanted to achieve as a ninja of Konohagakure. Minho had made an impassioned talk about following in the Fourth Hokage’s footsteps, which earned him a gold star from Iruka. Kibum had gone up directly after him, demanded he be brought a chair to use as a pedestal to stand on, and then determinedly told the entire class of his resolution to revolutionise the ANBU uniforms. He was met with stunned silence and an isolated standing ovation from Jonghyun (who claimed he had to pee when his name was called and didn’t appear again until the end of the lesson).
“For the record, I still think you have a stick up your ass,” Kibum feels the need to preface with, “But I don’t know. You make the whole... hero of the village thing sound kind of appealing. Extraordinary, even.”
Kibum looks thoughtful and poignant for second, a foreign look Minho is completely unaccustomed to. He’s unsure of what to do. Is this an invitation for deeper conversation? Minho and Kibum never really did the whole baring emotions thing. Unless Kibum swearing “Fuck! My souls being ripped apart, you douchebag!” while Minho was trying to treat a burn on his heel counts.
“Don’t look so torn,” Kibum says. “I mean, if making it to ANBU was as easy as passing the Chuunin exam, then I might as well just go with the flow, you know?”
Minho splutters a tiny bit. “Go with the flow. You’re joking right? Jongin is in hospital after--”
“I’m kidding! I’m kidding!” Kibum says. “Geez, you need to lighten up a bit.”
Minho sighs. “It’s true though,” he admits. “You deserve to be promoted. You’re good without trying. Even though you don’t appreciate it.”
Kibum licks his lips and holds down a pleased smile. “Whatever. I know you think I look fantastic in this jacket.”
“Yeah, alright Kibum. Whatever helps you sleep at night,” Minho says, jumping up to grab onto a washing line overhead.
“I should be saying that to you,” Kibum attests. He pauses for a second and then continues. “I used my Shintenshin Jutsu on you when I said I was going to the bathroom.”
Minho almost falls over his own feet. “You what?”
“Seriously,” Kibum continues excitedly, ignoring Minho’s outraged expression. “How good am I? You didn’t even notice.”
“That’s violating and a breach of trust!” Minho proclaims, cheeks turning red.
“Whoa. I was violating Dude, I’m the one who should be feeling violated. A good looking guy like me can’t do anything without being objectified, can I?” Kibum says.
“God,” Minho says, running a hand down his face. “Seriously, even if the entire nation was wiped out apart from you and me--”
“You would never,” Kibum imitates, deepening his voice into a barely audible grumble. “The feelings requited. I’d rather hook up with Iruka.”
“Jiraiya.”
“Orochimaru”
“Taemin,” Minho says, squeezing the back of Kibum’s neck and walking ahead of him.
“Jerk,” Kibum murmurs, watching Minho stride away from him. He looks down at his arm, his headband wrapped around it with the Konoha emblem facing towards his ribs. He adjusts it so he can see the symbol glint in the orange sunlight. Kim Kibum. Saanin. Sage. It had a ring to it, actually. He looks back up, Minho had stopped to wait for him, but upon making eye contact with Kibum, promptly turns around and continues his faux apathetic walk ahead. Kibum smiles and runs to catch up to him.
“Hey, but seriously though Minho. You weren’t being real with saying you’d rather hook up with Taemin over me. I mean, come on.”

“You would never,” Kibum imitates, deepening his voice into a barely audible grumble. “The feelings requited. I’d rather hook up with Iruka.”

“Taemin,” Minho says, squeezing the back of Kibum’s neck and walking ahead of him.
“Jerk,” Kibum murmurs, watching Minho stride away from him. He looks down at his arm, his headband wrapped around it with the Konoha emblem facing towards his ribs. He adjusts it so he can see the symbol glint in the orange sunlight. Kim Kibum. Saanin. Sage. It had a ring to it, actually. He looks back up, Minho had stopped to wait for him, but upon making eye contact with Kibum, promptly turns around and continues his faux apathetic walk ahead. Kibum smiles and runs to catch up to him.
“Hey, but seriously though Minho. You weren’t being real with saying you’d rather hook up with Taemin over me. I mean, come on.”
