da but i think if anything him not being able to show off his voice as much is mostly bc taemins joined the mix. i think all members except taemin and minho who've actually had an increase, have had a decrease in lines. and im not sure if what you mean by sm not showcasing him as a singer since 2011 means no solos, which he has had, or no musicals... which he hasn't...or smth else...and in terms of musicals... jong is the lead singer and has yet to do one, so i think it's fairly possible that it's a choice to take on a musical and not sth sm assigns you
it doesn't really make sense in that there's nothing like a quota, like 'we can only gaf about two singers in any single group'-- if anything super junior and dbsk already disproved that.
jonghyun is in fact the lead singer, and their songs are built primarily around his style and range-- this is no small matter, i don't know why everyone talks like it is.
korea wants more of onew's singing, but he's had only one ost in five years. his last album solo was, what, in 2009? very persuasive argument.
sm turned down two musicals for onew citing scheduling conflicts, which, um, isn't a very persuasive argument either. minho and key juggle schedules perfectly fine, plus onew was doing full promos, a show recording and a musical the last time this happened.
the reason he got royal villa is that the pd openly talked about onew being a contender. the reason he got bwb is that jessica recommended him personally. the reason he got roa is that the director of bwb recommended him.
onew has talked about basically teaching himself to be able to do his aria solo that one time. it's staggering to think that an ex-sm academy student and a full-time member of an sm group was not assisted with vocal coaching, but that's how it went.
immortal song is a great platform for letting idols out of the usual format and having them explore new genres. i absolutely do not begrudge taemin or jonghyun there- of course it was good that they went- but sm can send exo and not onew? hmm.
i could go on, because i've been noticing this stuff for years now.
no dummy, that wasn't even a solo that was a duet. smh im not even an onew stan and i know this. he had in your eyes, his first very own solo last yr around this time, since anything before then was a duet. like vanilla love, the one with jessica and the one with kim yeon woo.
are there receipts for sm turning down the musicals? last time he did that huge schedule he got sick iirc
yes, i was about to add a comment saying it wasn't even a solo. you're already resorting to things like "dummy"... and yes, "in your eyes" is the one ost i did actually mention.
i was in fandom and talking to k-shawols on forums when this stuff came out, they were upset about it because apparently people in the industry (musical theatre) still talk very highly of his work in those two he already did. i can probably find receipts and if i do i'll share them, but it's quite believable as it is.
he's made his desire for work clear, is the thing.
another thing i remembered is that yoon jong shin wants to give him music but... can't. it sounded pretty much like it was a problem with sm. ugh.
