There's his opening, the man with the knife trembling in the middle of the bar, reek of fear and blood and soju. His partner's in thrall, locked in the hold of the stranger's fingers. His partner, too young, too rash, hell that's why they stuck him with the kid.

Lee Taemin, youngest on the force. Jonghyun can't see his face.

The man's face is soft, there's a smile in his eyes instead of on what's left of his mouth. Soft hook of a nose, soft black halo of hair.

Taemin's shoulders are stiff, thin under that uniform shirt. Jonghyun's finger is poised, he doesn't need to hear this, doesn't want to hear this.

"My father... owned a meatshop. Ran it with my mom. One night they're working late, I'm a good kid, doing my homework. Little old me. Someone comes into the shop. Someone with a white face and a red, red smile. Before I look up from my book my daddy's down. Mommy's fast, goes for her trusty Gyuto. She's a butcher, she's spoilt for choice, but oh he doesn't like that. Oh no. He doesn't. Doesn't take him long, he comes to me at last. Laughs and runs that knife across my lips. Little old me, good at English. Here's what he says. He says, why so serious, son?"

Taemin is frozen. The man licks his lips, the sound hits the back of Jonghyun's throat.

"Mommy's blood is warm on that blade, I taste it on my tongue. Why so serious? he says."

Jonghyun's palm twitches. Too long. Too long. The man suddenly pauses, looks down at one of Jonghyun's men. Choi Minho, still alive on the floor.

The man shrugs. "Why so serious?"

wow calling jonghyun a cheater. he must really be a player, that's why they always choose him as the guy they don't want for their sister. i always wondered what the reason was.
