OKAY Y’ALL THIS IS WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH SHINEE IN YOO IN NA’S VOLUME UP RADIO SHOW:
they’re talking about what age they’re anticipating most, and when it gets to jonghyun, he does say 35, and when they ask him why, he does say because he thinks he’ll be married by then, and yoo in na is like “oh so it seems like your dream is to have a family” and jonghyun agrees.
NOW THIS IS WHERE THE GIRL/BOY PART COMES IN:
onew asks him, and i quote, “아들 좋아요? 딸 좋아요?” which means “do you like sons or daughters?” which was definitely translated super misleadingly.
BEFORE HE GETS THE CHANCE TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION, taemin asks him, “who do you want to do it (get married/have a family) with?” to which jonghyun is like “what?” everyone laughs, key makes some comment about thinking about it beforehand (can’t completely understand because laughter) and jonghyun says, “well, i’ll get married to a woman” (like, imagine he said “well, first of all, it will be a woman,” because it was that sort of tone) which is just his way of avoiding answering the who will you marry question and not a response to the boy/girl stuff which didn’t happen like everyone thinks it happened in the first place.
i’m not entirely sure what onew says afterwords but i hear 의구 which means “doubt” so it sounds like he says “i doubt it.” but whether he said that or “that’s unexpected,” given the context, it’s a joke, sarcasm. not at all what it was made out to be.
key does say something afterwards about “at that time” and “choice” but yoo in na laughs right in the middle of a really critical word and i’m not fluent enough to know what the hell he said without it, but it really doesn’t sound anything like “freedom to choose” and tbh what i could already understand is so different already from what was put out there that i’m calling this case closed. no one’s talking about anyone being gay or marriage equality or any of that. there’s certainly no “pulling your bandmate out of the closet” going on, which, for those of y’all who thought that was real funny, is a shitty thing to do always. don’t out anyone ever. ever.
other lessons to be learned: don’t joke about this shit. people’s identities aren’t yours to play with.
(if someone fluent in korean reads this and thinks i got some things drastically wrong or has anything to add then by all means, let me know, but i’m pretty confident in what i’ve got.)
